Writing when not at the height of your powers

Date: Tuesday 1 September 2026
Time: 15:30 Central European (Summer) Time
Duration: 75 mins
Location: on Zoom

Maybe you’re back from the summer and getting to grips with the new semester. Or you’ve been unwell but are feeling better, or have moved house but are getting settled in. Perhaps you’ve just returned from parental leave, or are resuming your creative-intellectual work after burnout, caregiving, or a pause.

And you want to get back to writing — and you do have some time — but it feels very difficult to get in.

This workshop offers you a guided exploration for writing when you’re not at the height of your powers.

How can we meet ourselves in such moments? What’s possible beyond avoiding our texts, or trying to discipline ourselves into pushing through?

What to expect

In this session, a key move we’ll make is to practise writing as a dual relationship: a relationship with yourself and with your project.

Especially in moments when you’re not at the height of your powers, it helps to look for a way to protect both.

Workshop flow:

  • We’ll explore what’s hard about writing when not at the height of your powers.
  • I’ll offer an embodied perspective on writing and capacity — one that can help you look after your writing and yourself at the same time.
  • Then I’ll facilitate a roughly 30-minute writing experiment for you to try on the spot, using a writing project you want to make progress with.
  • There’ll be some time for sharing and Q&A as well.

My hope is that you’ll come out with a renewed sense of possibility, and with the basics of an approach for supporting yourself in your writing that you can use whenever you need.

There’s no hard sell. I will mention my upcoming 8-week writing programme and other forms of writing-support I offer for about 3 minutes towards the end, so you’ll know possible pathways if you want to take this further.

Registration is open

Note #1: The writing experiment in this session involves physical movement, for which you’ll be off-camera and which can be adapted to suit your body and your circumstances. If you can, join from a place where you have privacy and won’t be interrupted for the duration of the session.

Note #2: The instructional content (but not participants’ sharing) will be recorded. If you register, you’ll get the recording.
