Writing when not at the height of your powers

FREE WORKSHOP (VIDEO)

Writing when not at the height of your powers

Academic writing is demanding work. It requires us not only to be analytically sharp, patient, and organized in bringing different pieces together, but also creatively and emotionally well resourced.

We aren’t always at the height of our power for writing — even when we technically have time to do it — for many good reasons.

And when writing isn’t going well, this itself can set in motion a negative cycle of feeling bad about writing, making it even harder to do.

So how do we meet ourselves in such moments?

What’s possible beyond avoiding our texts altogether, or trying to discipline ourselves into pushing through?

That’s the specific inquiry of this workshop.

The video

Registering below gives you access to the recording of my  experiential workshop on “writing when not at the height of your powers” that took place on 26 August 2025.

You won’t just be listening to me talk.

Instead, you get to explore ways to work with the tension that accompanies writing when not at your best. We’ll do this through a movement-and-writing sequence designed to bring you personally attuned insights — here and now — and to provide you with possible strategies you can return to on your own whenever you need.

The video is 78 minutes long and available to watch until 30 September 2025.

This is both a stand-alone session and a taster for my upcoming 8-week programme for academic writers, Cultivating a Sustainable Writing Practice (3 October – 2 December 2025).

Note: Registering will automatically sign you up for my newsletter, through which I send periodic content and  offers. If you don’t enjoy receiving those emails, you can unsubscribe at any time
